What would a 'Soul Food' site be without a recipe similar to the famous Kentucky Fried Chicken? You can make this KFC style chicken with any piece of chicken (yes, and for vegans even with oyster mushrooms!).
I personally like the Kentucky Fried Chicken best with chicken thigh. With the bone still in it, so. For the children I always take either chicken thigh fillet or chicken fillet, because there are no bones in them and they can therefore easily eat them.
You can make variations on this KFC recipe by playing with the spices that go into the batter. And of course you can also fry other things in this way. Pieces of fish, vegetables, you can't think of anything… with the special spices and the crispy layer, everything will be delicious!

This recipe is for 4 people
- 12 pieces of chicken (your choice, with or without bone)
- 200 ml buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- 1½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 300 gr flour
- oil for frying
Preparation Kentucky Fried Chicken:
To make the best KFC chicken, proceed as follows: First wash the chicken pieces with some vinegar and pat them dry. Then take a bowl and mix the buttermilk with all the spices, the salt and the pepper in it. Then mix half of the flour into the mixture you just made and stir until you get a smooth batter.
Now take a second bowl and put the other half of the flour in it. Then heat the oil in a frying pan or wok to 170°C.
Dip the chicken pieces first in the flour, then in the buttermilk and finally in the flour. Then slide the chicken pieces into the oil and fry until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
Finally, place the KFC chicken on kitchen paper to drain. Serve the Kentucky Fried Chicken with your favorite dipping sauce… or eat it straight!
