Green Mango Relish
Green mango relish is a kind of green (unripe) mango chutney. It is less sweet than the well-known mango chutney and therefore contains much less sugar. The taste of the green mangoes is fresh and sour, a bit like tamarind.
We make the green mango relish nice and spicy with a red Madame Jeanette pepper. Do you like a milder relish? Then use either a Spanish pepper or a small piece of Madame Jeanette.
As far as we are concerned, this is a top recipe for people who follow a keto (low-carb) diet. The green mango itself contains only about 6 grams of sugars per 100 grams. If you do not use sugar in this recipe, but opt for liquid sweetener (cyclamate), this fresh relish fits even in the strictest phases of a ketogenic diet. Nice!
Where can I find green mango?
The green mango you need for this recipe can be found in the freezer at most Surinamese Asian food stores. You are also sometimes lucky at the large Chinese supermarkets. So you buy the green mango as a frozen product. The halved mangoes are already peeled, but they still have a hard layer (part of the pit) on the inside. You can easily cut these out with a knife. Perfect for making this green mango relish!
You can make a very large jar of mango relish from this recipe... or of course 2 smaller ones 😉

- 500 gr green mango (frozen)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 50 ml of vinegar
- 50 ml water
- 1 (red) Madame Jeanette pepper, finely chopped
- 1 pickle, in small cubes
- a sprig of fresh parsley, finely chopped

- 1/2 tsp turmeric

Preparation green mango relish
This could just be the shortest recipe on the site… it is really easy to make the green mango relish yourself.
To start, cut the hard pieces out of the mango with a small knife. Then cut the mango into cubes.
Put the mango pieces together with the chopped onion in a pan and add the water and vinegar. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
Now add all the other ingredients and let the relish simmer for about 10 minutes. Depending on your taste/preference, you can use sugar or sweetener for this recipe.
Tip: Do you like a somewhat thicker green mango relish with fewer coarse pieces? Then pulse a few times with the hand blender, until about half is ground.
Enjoy!
