Spicy Surimi salad
Spicy surimi salad… that’s one of my favorite side dishes when it’s hot outside and I don’t feel like standing in the kitchen for a long time. But it’s also a great addition to your barbecue or party. What am I saying… it’s always possible!
What is surimi?
Surimi is a type of imitation crab made from whitefish, usually pollock. The fish is processed into a smooth paste, seasoned, and then pressed into the shape of crabmeat. Surimi has a soft texture and a mild, slightly salty flavor reminiscent of crab. The biggest advantage over crab? It's much (much!) cheaper!

In the video below you can see in 30 seconds how I make the surimi salad:
This recipe is for 4 servings of surimi salad.
Ingredients:
- 500 g surimi, crumbled
- ½ cucumber, diced
- 2 stalks celery, diced
- 1 red onion, chopped
- 3 spring onions, in rings
- 1 bunch of coriander, finely chopped
- 1 chili pepper, finely chopped
- juice of 1 lime
- ½ tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp tabasco (or to taste)
- 100 g mayo or fries sauce
- (or mix 50/50 with yoghurt for a light version)
Preparation of surimi salad:
Place the crumbled surimi in a large bowl. Then add the cucumber, celery, red onion, spring onion, coriander and chili pepper.
Then squeeze the lime juice over it and mix well. Now add the paprika powder, salt and tabasco.
Then stir in the mayo (or your light version) until everything is nicely mixed. Finally, let the salad sit in the fridge for 15 minutes so that the flavors are well absorbed.
Serve the salad as is, on a sandwich or as part of a buffet. Enjoy!
