Make your own applesauce
Apple sauce is perhaps the ultimate addition to Dutch dishes. Whether you eat it as dessert, with fries or alongside your vegetables… you simply can't go wrong with homemade applesauce. And did you know it's super easy to make too? With a few ingredients and fifteen minutes of your time, you can conjure up the most delicious homemade applesauce on the table!
Applesauce: homemade or from a jar?
Today I read in the news that the largest applesauce manufacturer in the Netherlands will shut down its production for a while next year. And that the price of the jars would go up considerably as a result. That gave me a bit of a short circuit – would people really pay that much money for something that you can easily make yourself?
There's a fruit grower in our neighborhood who offers apples all autumn and winter for €3 a crate. Each crate contains about 10 kilos of tasty, tart apples. Nice to eat as is, but perhaps even better as applesauce or apple pie . And for 30 cents a kilo, you can fill quite a few jars!
This recipe makes about 2 jars of applesauce. Do you need more or less? Then you can simply double or halve the recipe.
Ingredients:
- 8 fresh and sour apples
- 50 gr sugar
- 1 tl Caribbean Baking Spice
- 2 el water
Preparation of homemade applesauce
Peel the apples and cut them into dice. Put the apples together with the sugar, water and cinnamon in a pan and put it on the fire. When the apple pieces are boiling, you can lower the heat and put the lid on the pan.
Let the apples cook for 15-20 minutes, until they are soft. Meanwhile, stir a few times to avoid burning.
Eat the applesauce warm or cold – whichever you prefer, of course!
Tip: Are you not going to eat the applesauce right away? Then you can put it hot in preserving or jam jars and seal them well.
