Mulled wine
Mulled wine is one of the tastiest drinks you can drink in winter. It immediately reminds you of the cozy German Christmas markets. Such a glass of heated, spicy mulled wine (or in Dutch: Gluhwijn) is the perfect way to warm up on a cold, winter's day.
What is mulled wine?
Mulled wine is a drink made with red wine as a base. The wine is extra sweetened and warm spices are added. The most characteristic of mulled wine is of course that it is drunk warm (almost hot!). This way the flavors of the red wine and the spices come out even better.
In the Netherlands, this German specialty is also sometimes called mulled wine or spiced wine. You also sometimes see the Dutch name 'mulled wine'. The recipes of these variations of mulled wine are almost all the same. Here and there they 'play' with the amount of sugar or the spices.
Of course, you can also vary endlessly with this recipe. For example, I love orange in my mulled wine, but you can of course also make it with just spices. So just whatever you like best!
This recipe makes 8 glasses of mulled wine. Do you need more or less? Then you can easily halve or double the recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 L red wine
- 1 orange
- the zest of ½ lemon
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 5 cloves
- 2 pieces star anise
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar

Preparation of mulled wine
Take a pan with a thick bottom and pour in the liter of wine. Heat the wine over low heat. It is important during the entire recipe that the wine DOES NOT boil (this will cause the alcohol to evaporate)! The ideal temperature for mulled wine is 80°C.
Now cut the orange into slices and the lemon zest into strips about a centimeter thick. Add the orange and lemon zest to the wine in the pan.
Then add the cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise. Finally, add the sugar to the wine in the pan.
TIP: If you stick the cloves in one of the orange slices, you don't run the risk of them ending up in one of the glasses of mulled wine!
Let the mulled wine come to taste on a very low heat for half an hour. Again: the wine should not boil!
Serve the wine warm, optionally with a slice of orange in each glass. – Enjoy your drink!
